Tutorial masterpost!

Minimalism

This is a minimalist movie poster for Tron, I think it's a very interesting style but you need to be previously familiar with the subject matter to understand it sometimes

Gestalt

This picture is a great representation of the gestalt principle and proximity. All the individual dots convey the shape of a house

Graphic transitions

This one is a nice example of sequential work while also conveying emotion

Pixelation

This one personally caught my eye because of my interest in video games and the difficulty of using pixelated images in a design

Evolution of a logo

It's important to learn from the past, and even more so to see how much something has changed since it's conception

intricacy

This one blew me away with the complexity of the design and the technical skill that would have to go into making something like this

Simplistic typography

This one is cool because it conveys the definition of the word through the alteration of one letter

Thinking in terms of 3D

This picture made me think about how graphic design can be applied even to a 3D object

The Value of Creating Digital Vs. Traditional Art

“You can create something digitally that would be impossible to create by hand. Conversely, you can create something by hand that you cannot replicate digitally.”

I recently stumbled upon this blog piece that finally highlights the painstaking tension between handmade and digital art. As graphic design artists our talent is a double edged sword. We are two faced, where one side reflects our analog, robotic like semi-pofessionalism in computer programs and the click of a mouse and where the other side reflects our ability to hold a pencil in our hand and use that tool as a catalyst for creativity. But is the overuse of and codependence on computers detrimental to our art-making or instead the hubris which gives it inspiration? Can computer and tradition even live happily every after together? Read up on the article--it's definitely an effective shift of paradigm.

Spotlight on: Dana Tanamachi

She's the artist who took the road less traveled. This is a designer who utilizes a unique medium--perhaps a little old-school but still giving her the upper hand from her competition. She creates the perfect signage for businesses, events, you name it. Be sure to check out her work and to glean more about the medium that's slowly becoming the talk of the art world. Whole Foods has also hired some pretty incredible chalkboard artists to give their stores a little more pizzazz. Chalkboard art's ultimate fate is unknown, perhaps rivaled only by technology but few statistics mark it's demise anytime soon.

Top 5 Apps for Artists

If you are ever bored and looking for something to do, this website lists the top 5 apps for artists. I have not tried any yet, but they are definitely worth taking a look at.

How to Use Instagram to Showcase your Design.

It's all about social media. Instagram is as much as a professional networking tool as it is an image sharing app. Graphic designers have turned to Instagram as a outlet for showcasing their designs someplace other than the web, with a audience on a much bigger and larger scale than online portfolio websites. This article has really come in handy for all my seniors leaving this place come next spring. I think it's a truly helpful read.

A Magical Land called Behance.net

Behance is one of the greatest resources any wanna-be graphic design professional has at his or her fingertips. Anyone who wants to be creative has access to be inspired by thousands of online portfolios. Behance is an online platform and community that is integrated that serves as a santucary for artists and designers to showcase their professional work for potential clients and simply for the creative world to see.

Welcome to your second home:

Famous graphic design quotes

These are some interesting inspirational quotes by graphic designers in this article.

One of them is, “It’s through mistakes that you actually can grow. You have to get bad in order to get good.”

Useful Tips

Featured artists from this website give advice on how to improve color and composition, produce better inked work and smarter digital techniques. It gives a brief description of each, and even tells one how to come up with better concepts to help create your next artwork.

Styles of Art

I thought that this was a really cool way to look at the different styles of art. Although it doesn't include all the ones we have to use for our roughs, it was nice it see one idea in so many different ways.

Visuals

To get a better idea of what exactly constitutes the different visuals and how they should be represented I found a simple collage of the different expressions within drawing a piece of fruit. I'm a visual learner so this helped me to familiarize myself with these concepts fairly quickly.

Skin

I recently logged onto Mohawk's website to get a taste of what big art projects their paper was used for and how successful it printed. Mark Mcarty's Skin is the perfect candidate. The exhibit was called Skin: Mark McCarty Photographs, and was at the Opalka Gallery of the Sage Colleges in Albany, New York from October 30 to December 11, 2011. The images were meant to be seen at least life-size, exposing every unique imperfection, pore, scar and follicle of the subject. The final production was printed by Benchemark Printing in Schenectady on Mohawk Navajo, an "Inxwell" paper described as a "super-bright, super-smooth surface that allows super-detailed photo reproduction."
